African Women in Health On The Move: StatsCongo – An Initiative To Track Maternal Mortality in the DRC

It is a well-known fact that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to face an exacerbated maternity and newborns mortality rate due to poor healthcare and treatment access before, during and after pregnancy. Recognizing that socio-economic factors are the most significant indicators and roots causes of maternal, newborns and child mortality, greater accountability and capacity-building at the hospital and ministry of health level can be achieved through the use of technology and data-driven decision. To mitigate this gap, Stats Congo aims to be a hybrid providing data-informed decisions impacting women and children’s health in the DRC.

Stats Congo is a social enterprise piloted in Bukavu and Kinshasa (DRC), which seeks to help hospitals inform their best practices when serving vulnerable women and children, through effectively collected data that is monitored and analyzed to strengthen local efforts. Stats Congo is helping hospitals go paperless, quantifying their patient management efforts, and becoming a liaison between hospitals and the national ministry of health.

Funded by Grand Challenges Canada as part of the Stars In Global Health 2018 winner, Stats Congo opted for a social enterprise approach combined with a social impact-driven business model to make our efforts sustainable at the Congolese level. Ultimately, we aim to advocate for women and children’s welfare, through impactful data-driven health outcomes evidence-based statistical analyses, starting at the local hospital. By hiring local experts and partnering with Congolese hospitals, Stats Congo seeks to tell an African numeric narrative of women and children’s health through rigorous data.
